:
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from SK Rose -- Bad print : I love this book however this print has a line down most pages where no ink is printed and letters are missing making an already difficult text hard to decipher ( Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Lord Oklaw -- Almost Unreadable : The book seems to be almost a direct translation from the Latin. If that is what you want then this is for you. Otherwise this is almost painful to read. Take this example: "not frequently nor without necessity to say to anyone, or to write in a letter, that I have no leisure, nor continually to excuse the neglect of duties require by our relation to those with whom we live, by alleging urgent occupations." Huh? The book itself is hardcover and seems to be excellent quality with nice paper. This is the George Long translation, if that matters to you. Would recommend you find a different version with a more modern translation. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from lizzard -- Sent it back. Got different Copy. : Small, hard to read print. Cheaply made. The Penguins Classic new translation is much better and easily worth the higher price (not to mention the wording is easier to understand). ( Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2018 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Stephen -- Great content...horrendous format : Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is phenomenal and provides exceptional advice for living your life. That said, there are many, many versions of his writings available. This is not a good example, choose a different publisher. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Neelam -- An exceptional book : I was influenced to read this book after seeing a lot of people recommend it and how influential the book was in changing their life. I read this version and a couple of other versions at the same time to get a better perspective on the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Yeap -- Table of contents? : Firstly, This review concerns only the physical aspects of the book, it is not an arrogant ameture critique of a magisterial work of which has & will always continue to remain relevant (I can’t stand the latter). ( Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Ryan Lawson -- Not a pocket-sized book : For all those who enjoy collecting the Shambhala “pocket” classics, this is not a pocket sized book at all. What a tremendous disappointment. I have collected these pocket classics for years. This one is twice the size as the others from the so-called Shambhala Pocket Classics. The entire reason I purchased it was the hope that it would be pocket sized. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James D. Persinger -- One of my favorite reads : I've long appreciated the Stoics, but hadn't ever gotten around to reading this classic. Some truth is universal across cultures and centuries, and Aurelius' gaze is steady, even-tempered and wise. I was inspired when he “recordeth what and of whom, whether Parents, Friends or Masters; by their good examples, or good advice and counsel, he had learned.” He tells us to be humble, and “whensoever though wilt rejoice thyself, think and meditate upon those good parts and especial gifts, which thou hast observed in any of them that live with thee.” I actively did this in letters to my mentors, wife and parents - a gift for them, and also for myself. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Anonymous -- This looks and feels very cheap for the price. Have I been scammed? : Considering the price, and the image posted, you would think this is a beautiful edition, bound in cloth (as it actually claims on the blurb). In fact, it is sleeved is cheap, glossy paper. It's bound in low-quality, waxy plastic. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 16, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Modern stoics : It is true that this book has little structure, theme of common purpose for its parts, however, this book is a wealthy reflection of a previous time. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 19, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Great insights : Mu key issues are with the edition rather than the content. I don’t understand why the edition can’t replace “thy” with “yours”. It’s not the original text but a translation from Greek so they can change the vocab to make it less distracting. Also the book is needlessly long and awkward to hold. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Luis F. C. Ladeira -- Stoic aphorisms from a Roman emperor : About the book: An insightful series of aphorisms heavily grounded on stoic school of thought. The examples Marcus Aurelius uses to make his case is a delightful portrait of life during the Roman empire. Some statements may sound like prejudice today, but nothing offensive if you appreciate how old it is. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Meletanmuse -- I use this book as an I Ching that actually says useful things. I recommend it to anyone who has ... : A post-deist moral structure for the modern world, a wise word from a critical friend, speculations about the nature of the universe and insights into what it is to be both human and prone to error. I use this book as an I Ching that actually says useful things. I recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered why...? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2016 )
