Cry of the Kalahari Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from MLF -- Interesting : A friend recommended this book, along with the 2 others written by Mark and Delia Owens, and she said to read them in order. That's important as it starts at the beginning of their work in the Kalahari. The writing is engaging and the stories amazing. It's incredible what they lived through and survived. It's worth a read if you're interested in Africa and the creatures that dwell there. I didn't read the appendices. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from rickeitt -- Living with lions : Mark and Delia Owens wrote this book about life in the Kalahari desert in Botswana. Their writing style is incredible, bringing you right next to lions, jackals, hyenas and the many dangers of life in remote Africa. If you have some interest in a lions-eye view of life in drought stricken Africa, this is the book to read. Filled with emotional relationships.... not only as a couple, but the relationships of lions and all the many animals of Africa. The Owens write from the heart and it comes though, loud and clear. Their love of animals and the natural world is both energizing and heart wrenching as they fill each page with the adventures of love and life in a remote part of our planet. Highly recommend this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from TAnn -- Kalahari : I was hooked on this story right from the first paragraph. The authors are straight forward in the relating of their story. Their tales of hardships, heat, rain, rationing of resources and hard work resonate deeply. The relationship they have with the animals is felt in a personal and respectful level. Well worth reading ... ( Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from tweetybird -- Fascinating True Life Adventure : I loved this book and could not put it down. It's about a young couple wanting to discover more about the social lives of animals in the wilds of the Kalihari Desert in Africa. That they survived is truly amazing, but their naïve enthusiasm is catching and you feel you have lived through this adventure with them. Highly recommended! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Holmes -- This is a fascinating take on Botswana in the 1970s : We just travelled to northern Botswana for two weeks, and were enthralled by the animals. So it was fascinating to read about it in the 70's. We were on travel safaris, and I applaud their efforts surveying the animals, scientifically and thoroughly 40 years ago, when it was truly wilderness.. Having just seen and learned about the wildlife populations first hand, it was interesting to learn more jackals , hyenas and lions who are all stunning. In the end, i knew nothing about the destructive fences that were strangling the wildlife populations. I was happy to read how the Owens fought successfully for removing the fences. Both Mark and Delia Owens wrote chapters, and while the writing styles were individual, the book reads cohesively. It is a terrific story. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from ddarby -- A good way to experience the Kalahari - or enhance a personal experience. : Bought it to read while on photo safari in South Africa and Botswana, but I was too exhausted each evening after two game drives per day. Reading it afterwards, I have a much greater appreciation and understanding of the Owens' experiences, joys, and frustrations. It's not a literary masterpiece, but I think it gives a great picture of both animal and human life in the Kalahari - and a reflection of all life on earth. With my personal experience and reading Mark's and Delia's experience, I don't think I can ever enjoy a zoo the same way I once did. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JanG. - byrdgrl -- I could hardly put it down : How and where do I start with this review? I guess, in keeping with the review title I will say that Cry of the Kalahari almost made me cry, from lack of sleep. I would settle in with the intention of reading for one hour and find myself still reading after 3. It's rare for me to find books these days that I don't want to put down. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Susana Conde -- Good read for those of us who care about animal conservation : This book was published 32 years ago, and many of the observations, research, and conservation recommendations in this book still obtain today, albeit with some major caveats. Through the emphases in their misadventures in the Kalahari, the authors give rather short shrift to what many of us would have wished to know about predator species. But, through inspiring and sometimes poetic prose, they manage to thoroughly engage the reader from the beginning to end of their dangerous adventure.
